Start at Skanderbeg Square, one of the largest pedestrian spaces in the Balkans, and let the city radiate outward. Descend into Bunk'Art, a vast Cold War bunker turned museum, and come back up into Blloku — once closed to ordinary Albanians, now the busiest café and bar district in the country. Ride the Dajti Ekspres cable car and the whole valley falls away beneath you.

Driving in Tirana: Direct, Improving, Full of Reward

The main highways are modern and the country is compact — you can cross from the capital to the sea, the mountains, or the ancient south in a couple of hours.

Local Driving Essentials:

• Drive on the right-hand side
• Speed limits: 40–50 km/h in urban areas, 80–90 km/h on rural roads, up to 110 km/h on motorways
• Seatbelts: required for all passengers
• Alcohol limit: effectively zero tolerance (0.01%) — do not drink and drive
• Headlights: keep them on outside built-up areas
• City driving is busy and assertive — take it calmly and give yourself extra time
• Mountain and rural roads can be narrow with variable surfaces; drive to the conditions
• Parking: paid street parking in the centre plus garages near Skanderbeg Square and Blloku
• An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your national licence
